The Department of Modern Foreign Languages in the Humanities Division of Vincennes University invites applications for a fall semester (August—December 2012) contract faculty position in Spanish.  The teaching load is at least 15 credit hours of beginning, intermediate, and occupationally specific courses in Spanish.  Depending on enrollments, we hope that this can become a full-time position in the future.

Spanish: Legend of Beatriz and Fernando in Durango (Mexico)

Hola everyone! Claudia Sadowski here, I have a legend to share with you, I hope you enjoy it!

In many Latin American countries legends are part of their culture. Durango, Mexico is no exception. The legend is about a religious nun who seems to appear in one of the towers of the cathedral located across the main plaza, downtown Durango capital city of the state of Durango, Mexico.
The legend describes a nun named Beatriz. This nun was allegedly placed in a convent, of what nowadays is known as the Cathedral, located in Durango, Durango, Mexico. Her parents belonged to the highest elite of the city, and they were very influential.  Consequently, due to the fact that Beatriz was the only child, her parents opted to send her to the convent.
One day, destiny brought a French soldier named Fernando near Beatriz. They secretly fell in love. Fernando promised Beatriz that he would return and that they were going to escape and get married. He never returned. Nevertheless, Beatriz would look out for him from the top of one of the towers of Cathedral. She died waiting. Until this day, visitors from all over the world are able to see a white shadow that reflects the profile of Beatriz waiting for Fernando.
Below I have included pictures that I took last week while I was visiting Durango, Durango, Mexico. Additionally, you may find a link to a poem of an author named Manuel Lozana Cigarroa who wrote it in order to honor this legend. 
On the above website you will also find a picture they included on that website with the white shadow of the nun circled for your enjoyment.
There are many ways an instructor could use the legend.  We can ask our students if they know of a legend near their places of origin. Students can do research of legends that are of their interest and they can represent them in class by doing reenactments or plays based on the legends they find. In what other ways, as an instructor, can you use this information?

To all teachers of idioms.

Idioms can be confusing. Is a Monster in the closet literally... or figuratively? And what does it mean figuratievly anyways?

My students are actually pretty good at these (YAY for one thing I don't need to review for this Summer's TOEFL course) but what I really like about this site is the ability to find idioms in other languages.

This way you can give students an example of something that is not literal in their language (compared to a direct translation of the english idiom).

Yes, yes, I know I know avoid translations when possible, but this is something I have found that really helps students understand the concept behind idioms rather than just memorizing words which don't seem to make sense.

Language Policy: Scotland to start language learning at age 4

Policy news in Scotland: Education leaders there state that a new policy to teach foreign languages more aggressively (as early as age 4) is vital to the country's economy. Estimates show losing approximately 590 million pounds per year because of a manque of language skills. 

This new policy is not without its detractors, however, who criticize the plan as overly ambitious in light of recent government cuts which saw the number of foreign language classroom assistants fall to 59 in recent figures from 284 in 2005.

EFL: Parts of Speech Poem

When I was in high school, college and even throughout my masters I met a LOT of students who didn't know the basic parts of speech.

When I was in elementary school I learned a poem which started, "Nouns are just the names of things like rice and birds and snow and rings" it went on to explain other parts of speech, "When something is done the adverb then tells how and why and where and when" etc.

I heavily altered the poem to focus on what I teach in one of my classes and review the basics.

I also wanted to make it more dynamic and interactive than just a poem so I made it into a mad libs like assignment.

News: Fla. school offering full day GED program in Spanish

Leto High School in Hillsborough County, Fla., is trying new strategies to help recent immigrants complete their high school education. The school is offering those students struggling with their English speaking ability full day classes taught in Spanish in order to prepare them to take the GED, which is also in Spanish. This new approach is given as an alternative to the regular school day because the students then would have to pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, offered only in English. Jobs: German position, South Jersey

We need a full-time German teacher in South Jersey. The position is
full-time - 6 classes German I-V. If a teacher cannot be found, the school
has decided to put in any language for which they can find a teacher. It
would be a terrible shame to see a strong program go bottom-up.

We teacher French, German, Latin, and Spanish -- five years of each
including a middle school program which is in the same building. Now I know
that NJ strikes fear into everyone's heart, but I also know that many areas

Using Raytheon's new BBN TransTalk, an English speaker can have his words translated into languages such as Arabic or Farsi, and have the other speaker's words played back in English.
