Spanish Video: El Sol y el Viento del Norte

Hello everyone, Claudia here again with a fun video I found for fellow Spanish teachers and learners. This one is called El Soly y el Viento del Norte! This is an animated video about 10 minutes in length and is essentially a children's story. Nevertheless, it provides good listening comprehension practice especially for vocabulary. Enjoy!

German: 2013 Einstein Calendar

Chris here again with a cool resource for fellow German teachers and learners. About.com has a bilingual German/English 2013 Einstein calendar which is available as a free pdf via the link below:

http://www.aboutgerman.net/agn_Kalender.htm

In addition to monthly quotations by Albert Einstein, the 2013 calendar also features the birthdays of more than 160 notable German-speaking personalities. The words of Einstein, who was at various times a citizen of Germany, Switzerland and the USA – when he wasn't a stateless person, are in the original German with English translations. This is truly a great resource for teachers and learners alike!

German: Buddy vs. DJ The Wave - Ab in den Süden (song)

Here is Christina with a funny German beach song that will help you get through these frosty winter days: the summer hit "Ab in den Süden" by Buddy vs. DJ The Wave.

The lyrics might not be a masterpiece of poetic eloquence but they will definitely make you smile!

AB IN DEN SÜDEN - Deutsch

Oh willkommen, willkommen, willkommen Sonnenschein!
Wir packen unsre sieben Sachen in den Flieger rein.
Ja wir kommen, wir kommen, wir kommen,
macht euch bereit,
reif für die Insel, Sommer, Sonne,
Strand und Zärtlichkeit.

Raus aus dem Regen,
ins Leben,
ab in den Süden,
der Sonne entgegen,
was erleben,
einen heben,
und dann Bikinis erleben.
Jetzt kommt es dick Mann!
Ich rette den Tag,
ich sag, ab geht die Party,
und die Party geht ab.

Und ich sag:
Eeeeeeeeey, ab in den Süden,
der Sonne hinterher,
ey jo, was geht,
der Sonne hinterher,
ey jo, was geht.
Ja ich sag:
Eeeeeeeeey, ab in den Süden,
der Sonne hinterher,
ey jo, was geht,
der Sonne hinterher,
ey jo, was geht.

Sommer, Sonne, Sonnenschein,
Sommer, Sommer, So So So...

Oh, wir kommen, wir kommen,
wir kommen Sonnenschein!
Den ganzen Tag am Strand
ziehn wir uns die Melonen rein.
Ja Tequila, Tequila, Tequila, Wonderbra,
und heute Nacht
machen wir noch die ganze Insel klar.

Raus aus dem Regen,
ins Leben,
ab in den Süden,
der Sonne entgegen,
was erleben,
einen heben,
und dann Bikinis erleben.
Jetzt kommt es dick Mann!
Ich rette den Tag,
ich sag, ab geht die Party,
und die Party geht ab.

Und ich sag:
Eeeeeeeeey, ab in den Süden,
der Sonne hinterher,
ey jo, was geht,
der Sonne hinterher,
ey jo, was geht.
Ja ich sag:
Eeeeeeeeey, ab in den Süden,
der Sonne hinterher,
ey jo, was geht,
der Sonne hinterher,
ey jo, was geht.

One two two,
two two, two
two three three,
three three.
Three four four,
four four fo-four,
four, three, two, one!

Nananananana...
One two two,
two two, two
two three three,

Three, four four,
four fo-four,

one two three four!

Eeeeeeeeey, ab in den Süden,
der Sonne hinterher,

Ja ich sag:
Eeeeeeeeey, ab in den Süden,

ey jo, was geht,
der Sonne hinterher,

DOWN TO THE SOUTH - English

Hey welcome, welcome, welcome
sunshine!
We store our belongings in the jet.
Yes, we're coming, we're coming, we're coming,
get ready,
We are ready for the island, summer, sun,
beach and tenderness.

Out of the rain,
into life,
down to the south,
towards the sun,
have a ball,

have a drink,
and then experience bikinis.
It's gonna be fat!
I save the day,
I say, the party will get cooking,
and the party gets cooking.

And I say:
Eeeeeeeeey, down to the south,
follow the sun,
ey jo, what's up,
follow the sun,
ey jo, what's up.
Yeah I say:
Eeeeeeeeey, down to the south,
follow the sun,
ey jo, what's up,
follow the sun,
ey jo, what's up.

Summer, sun, sunshine,
summer, summer, su su su...

Oh, we come, we come,
we come sunshine!
All the day at the beach
we check out the melons
Yeah Tequila, Tequila, Tequila, Wonderbra,
and this very night
we'll pick up the whole island.

Out of the rain,
into life,
down to the south,
towards the sun,
have a ball,
have a drink,
and then experience bikinis.
It's gonna be phat!
I make the day,
I say, the party will get cooking,
and the party gets cooking.

And I say:
Eeeeeeeeey, down to the south,
follow the sun,
ey jo, what's up,
follow the sun,
ey jo, what's up.
Yeah I say:
Eeeeeeeeey, down to the south,
follow the sun,
ey jo, what's up,
follow the sun,
ey jo, what's up.

One two two,

Balloons? Yes please!

Who doesn't love balloons? Well, my sister is actually afraid of them (Random fact: globophobia is the fear of balloons)

Other than my sister though balloons are fun! They make us think of parties and other get-togethers. How can you bring the excitement of balloons into the class?

Games
  • My college courses often play a review game where they blow up balloons and then divide the class into two groups. The students each take turns coming to the class and popping balloons different randomly selected ways. "Pop the balloon with your butt, against someone else, with your chest, with your hands, etc" Once they did that, they could run to the board and answer a question. If they answer the question correctly their team gets a point. As a teacher I thought it was a waste of time (all the balloon popping really doesn't have much of an educational aspect), but my students loved it! They got SO involved in the class I think it was worth it. I added another aspect, if anyone spoke any language other than English their team lost a 1 point.
  • There's a great game on reviewing categories with balloons here Essentially balloons are treated as whiteboards and students have to fill them with different vocabulary words. There's a similar game involving balloons without helium here (it is essentially a volleyball game).
Visuals
  • If you are reading from a book or having them listen to a tape script where students may be confused about who says what use balloons to distinguish. Write the names on the different colored balloons and hold the appropriate balloon up when the appropriate person is talking.
  • Learning emotions? Draw faces on balloons! Students LOVE it :-)
  • Add some fun to group work! When checking multiple choice quizzes have students review their answers in a group and then hold up a colored balloon to indicate their choice (A-red, B-yellow, C-orange, D-white)

News: Persuasive lessons planned for English Language Learners

In a recent blog post, Lesli Maxwell writes about middle school students with a moderate understanding of the English language that soon will be taught persuasive writing as part of a test unit that uses complex works, such as the Gettysburg Address.

Developed over several months in 2012 by Stanford University's Understanding Language team, the unit is expected to determine the resources, teacher knowledge and instructional supports required to teach a rigorous, Common Core State Standards-based curriculum to English learners. The unit will be tested by nearly 10 teachers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, N.C., Chicago, and Denver school districts.

According to Gabriela Uro, a member of the Understanding Language team and the director of ELL policy and research for the Council of the Great City Schools, the pilot unit will reveal "what it really takes" in terms of resources, teacher knowledge, and instructional support to implement such a rigorous unit. French Video: Les Trois Inventeurs

Hello everyone, Claudia here,

Here's a cute video you can use in your French classes. I'll post the script as well so you can write some questions for it. You can also ask students questions about what they see in the video, for instance, what inventions are made? or ask them to rewrite the ending. Enjoy!

A mort ! A mort ! Tous à l’échafaud ! A bas les inventeurs ! On en a assez des inventeurs ! A mort ! Allez ! A bas les inventeurs ! A mort ! Pendons-les ! A mort !

News: Visit from pro hockey player inspires French students

Chris here again with your language learning news. Today I would like to share a cool article I came across that French teachers and learners will like. Guillaume Desbiens, a player from the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves, recently visited Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, Ill., to engage in a Q&A session with students in French. The visit was part of the National Hockey League's (NHL's) outreach program.

A Quebec native, Desbien fielded questions in front of an audience of about 130 students, giving them a chance to practice their language skills. "At first I was intimidated by him speaking French, but then it was cool to be around someone who fluently speaks it," sophomore Layne Thresh said.

You can read more about Desbien's visit via the article linked below:

http://trib.in/10SotdL

This visit brings up an interesting point for language programs/classes/teachers. How beneficial would such visits be and would it be possible to work in classroom visits by native speakers?  It goes without saying that having a celebrity or pro athlete who speaks whichever language you are teaching come to visit is highly unlikely. Nevertheless, this could be a great avenue to pursue for language programs in this time of budget crises. Comments welcome!

German: Herbert Grönemeyer - Der Weg (song)

Here is Christina with one of the most beautiful and sad German songs ever written. Herbert Grönemeyer wrote "Der Weg" after he lost his wife, Anna Henkel. She died in 1998 of breast cancer.

The lyrics are stunningly poetic. My favorite line is "haben den Regen gebogen" (bent the rain), a brilliant world play on the German noun "Regenbogen" (rainbow).

DER WEG - Deutsch

Ich kann nicht mehr seh'n
Trau nicht mehr meinen Augen
Kann kaum noch glauben
Gefühle haben sich gedreht

Ich bin viel zu träge
Um aufzugeben
Es wär auch zu früh
Weil immer was geht

Wir waren verschworen
Wären für einander gestorben
Haben den Regen gebogen
Uns Vertrauen geliehen

Wir haben versucht
Auf der Schussfahrt zu wenden
Nichts war zu spät
Aber vieles zu früh

Wir haben uns geschoben
Durch alle Gezeiten
Haben uns verzettelt
Und verzweifelt geliebt

Wir haben die Wahrheit
So gut es ging verlogen
Es war ein Stück vom Himmel
Dass es dich gibt

Du hast jeden Raum
Mit Sonne geflutet
Hast jeden Verdruss
Ins Gegenteil verkehrt

Nordisch nobel
Deine sanftmütige Güte
Dein unbändiger Stolz
Das Leben ist nicht fair

Den Film getanzt
In einem silbernen Raum
Vom goldenen Balkon
Die Unendlichkeit bestaunt

Heillos versunken, trunken
Und alles war erlaubt
Zusammen im Zeitraffer
Mittsommernachtstraum

Du hast jeden Raum
Mit Sonne geflutet
Hast jeden Verdruss
Ins Gegenteil verkehrt

Nordisch nobel
Deine sanftmütige Güte
Dein unbändiger Stolz
Das Leben ist nicht fair

Dein sicherer Gang
Deine wahren Gedichte
Deine heitere Würde
Dein unerschütterliches Geschick

Du hast der Fügung
Deine Stirn geboten
Hast ihn nie verraten
Deinen Plan vom Glück

Ich geh hier nicht weg
Hab meine Frist verlängert
Neue Zeitreise
Offene Welt

Habe dich sicher
In meiner Seele
Ich trag dich bei mir
Bis der Vorhang fällt

Ich trag dich bei mir
Bis der Vorhang fällt

THE WAY - English

I can no longer see
Don't believe my eyes any more
Can hardly believe
Feelings all turned around

I'm much too lazy
To give up
Besides it would be too soon
Because there's always a way

We were bound together
Would have died for each other
Bent the rain into a bow
Lent each other our trust

We tried to
Turn while schussing
Nothing was too late
But much was too soon

We have shoved each other
Through all the tides
We got sidetracked together
Loved desperately

We denied the truth
The best we could
It was a piece of heaven
That you exist

Every room you
Flooded with sun
Every frustration
You turned around

Nordic noble
Your gentle goodness
Your untamed pride
Life isn't fair

Danced the movie
In a silver room
From a golden balcony
We stood in awe of eternity

Helplessly sunken, drunken
And everything was allowed
Together in time-lapse
Midsummer-Night's Dream

Every room you
Flooded with sun
Every frustration
You turned around

Nordic noble
Your gentle goodness
Your untamed pride
Life isn't fair

Your confident stride
Your true poetry
Your serene dignity
Your unshakeable grace

Your destiny
You defied
You never betrayed
Your plan for happiness

I'm not leaving here
I've extended my stay
New time travel
Open world

I have you safe
Inside my soul
I'll carry you with me
Until the curtain falls

I'll carry you with me
Until the curtain falls
