English Idioms & Phrasal Verbs with Jose Cuervo

I am not a huge song worksheet teacher. I find that they become too much of a crutch when you can do so many other things. Nonetheless sometimes inspiration strikes and you just can't ignore it!

NOTE: The worksheet and song both include references to alcohol. Please DO NOT use this unless your EFL students are old enough and your school is OK with it.

I repeat THIS SONG MENTIONS ALCOHOL! Please use your best judgement.

This is a simple worksheet where I copied the lyrics and then changed any phrasal verb, idiom, or other word I thought my students wouldn't know. Then I put the words I took out in a word bank. The students need to match the synonym with the original word. I would treat this as a reading exercise and then put the song on to double check their answers.

Next the worksheet checks comprehension by having the students put the events that happen in the song in order.

Finally students are given two different options as a final production task (drawing or writing).

The song is an awesome song for these types of phrases because it is filled with figurative language (can't carry a tune in a bucket, left feet, drown your sorrows, etc). It is country song and I tend to prefer this genre with EFL students. I find the narratives are easier to follow the rhythm slower and the the pronunciation clearer.

Here's a music video you could use in class, or just to listen to the song quickly:

This worksheet (which is just one page, but also includes a one page answer sheet) is available for free on Teachers Pay Teachers. If you don't already have a membership it is FREE just sign up here. If you do download the worksheet please leave a review to tell me what you thought or comment here.

What's your favorite song to use with idioms?  Let us know what you think! Connect with us @C_LaCross or @ESLcarissa

German: Word of the Week - das Kuscheltier

Here is Christina with the German word of the week!

This week:
das Kuscheltier /  the stuffed animal

A "Kuscheltier" is a cuddly toy! I am sure you all had one when you were little. There are many different kind of "Kuscheltiere" but the most famous one is probably the teddy bear (der Teddybär).

Here are some examples of how you can use this word:

Hast du mein Kuscheltier gesehen? / Have you seen my stuffed animal?
Dein Kuscheltier ist in der Waschmaschine. / Your stuffed animal is in the washing machine.
Ich habe ein Kuscheltier gewonnen! / I have won a stuffed animal!
Peter liebt sein Kuscheltier. / Peter loves his stuffed animal.
Mein Kuscheltier heisst Teddy. / The name of my stuffed animal is Teddy.

German: Wir sind Helden - Nur ein Wort (song)

Here is Christina with another great German song:
"Nur ein Wort" by Wir sind Helden.

Wir sind Helden have great lyrics full of word play and idioms! It is fun to have a closer look at the song text of "Nur ein Wort"!

Nur ein Wort

Ich sehe, dass du denkst.
Ich denke, dass du fühlst.
Ich fühle, dass du willst,
aber ich hör dich nicht. Ich
hab mir ein Wörterbuch geliehen,
dir A bis Z ins Ohr geschrien.

stumm,
wenn nachts ein Mädchen drüber fällt.
Zu deinen Füßen
red ich mich
um Kopf und Kragen.
Ich will in deine tiefen Wasser
große Wellen schlagen.

Oh bitte gib mir nur ein Oh.
Bitte gib mir nur ein Oh.
Bitte gib mir nur ein,
Bitte bitte gib mir nur ein Wort.

In meinem Blut werfen
die Endorphine Blasen,
wenn hinter deinen stillen
Hasenaugen die Gedanken rasen.
Just a word

I see that you think
I think that you feel
I feel that you want
But I don’t hear you, I
borrowed a dictionary
Screamed A to Z in your ear
I stockpile a thousand muddleheaded words
That tug at your sleeves
And wherever you want to go
I’ll hold on to your legs
And if you’re at a loss for words
Why don’t you lose yourself in me

Oh, please just give me an oh
Please just give me an oh
Please just give me a
Please, please just give me a word

It’s crazy how beautifully you keep quiet
How you tilt your cute head
And how you give the whole loud world
an me
The cold shoulder
Your silence is your tent
You put it in the middle of the world
You tighten the strings and are silently flabbergasted
When a girl trips over them at night
At your feet
I talk
like a raging waterfall
I want to knock large waves
Into your deep waters

Oh, please just give me an oh
Please just give me an oh
Please just give me a
Please, please just give me a word

In my blood
The endorphins thrust bubbles
When the thoughts race
Behind your quiet rabbit eyes

Spanish: Cenicienta

Hello everyone,

Today's Spanish story for children is Cinderella. You can have your students, even adults, watch the video and try to narrate it themselves, write the story in Spanish, or listen to the story while watching and then doing an activity at the end. Let me know if you can think of other ways to use these stories in the classroom!

Spanish: Antología - Shakira

Hola, Claudia here again. Today I have an old song by Shakira to share which you can use to help your students practice the preterit tense.

Me enseñaste a decir mentiras piadosas

German: Word of the Week - Semmelknödel

Here is Christina with something new: The word of the week!

Our first word of the week is
der Semmelknödel /  bread dumpling

Semmelknödel are a delicious Bavarian dish! They are made from old bread, milk, butter, and spices. Semmelknödel are usually served with a mushroom sauce of with meat.

Here are some examples of how you can use our word of the week:

Ich esse gerne Semmelknödel. / I love to eat bread dumplings.
Semmelknödel sind mein Lieblingsgericht. / Bread dumplings are my favorite food.
Meine Oma macht die besten Semmelknödel. / My granny makes the best bread dumplings.
Semmelknödel schmecken am besten mit Pilzen. / Bread dumplings taste best with mushrooms.
In Bayern isst man oft Semmelknödel. / In Bavaria, people eat breat drumplings a lot.

The best way to find out what exactly a Semmelknödel is, is by trying one. You can make your own following the recipe on this great website for German foods:

German: Culcha Candela - Von Allein (song)

Here is Christina with another fun German summer song:
"Von Allein" by Culcha Candela, a multicultural Dancehall group founded in Berlin in 2001.

(With this song happiness comes naturally!)

The lyrics are like the band: multicultural - German mixed with Spanish.

Deutsch

Komm vorbei
und alles andere kommt dann von allein.

Que que salta
Que mueve tu cuerpo y salta
Que que toca el techo y brinca
Y siente el ritmo es soca
Sigue sigue salta
Que que mueve tu cuerpo salta
Que que toca el techo y brinca
Y siente el ritmo todo el mundo

Keiner fragt wieso.
Keiner fragt warum.
Keiner fragt wie's geht.
Denn es geht schon von allein.
Keiner fragt wohin.
Keiner fragt wie lang.
Keiner fragt mit wem.
Denn es geht schon von allein.
Die Erde dreht sich von allein.
Dein Arsch bewegt sich von allein.
Die Gläser füllen sich von allein.
Alles geht heut‘ von allein.
Deutschland tanzt von allein.
Jeder kann‘s von allein.
Denk nicht nach, lass es sein.
Denn alles geht heut‘ von allein.
Que mueve tu cuerpo
Que estás caliente
Me encantas Mami

Komm, lass dich einfach gehen.

Keiner fragt wieso.
Keiner fragt warum.
Keiner fragt wie's geht.
Denn es geht schon von allein.
Keiner fragt wohin.
Keiner fragt wie lang.
Keiner fragt mit wem.
Denn es geht schon von allein.
Die Erde dreht sich von allein.
Dein Arsch bewegt sich von allein.
Die Gläser füllen sich von allein.
Alles geht heut‘ von allein.
Deutschland tanzt von allein.
Jeder kann‘s von allein.
Denk nicht nach, lass es sein,
Denn alles geht heut‘ von allein.
Que mueve tu cuerpo
Que estás caliente
Me encantas Mami

Egal ob blau, weiß, grün,
Egal ob schwarz, rot, gold,
Wir feiern alle Farben.
Wir bringen das Ding ins Rollen,
Deine Fahne in die Luft.
Hey
Deine Fahne in die Luft.
Alle Leute strahlen.
Es fühlt sich so gut an.
Uns gehören die Straßen.
Wir machen voll Alarm.
Deine Fahne in die Luft
Hey
Deine Fahne in die Luft.

Keiner fragt wieso.
Keiner fragt warum.
Keiner fragt wie's geht.
Denn es geht schon von allein.
Keiner fragt wohin.
Keiner fragt wie lang.
Keiner fragt mit wem.
Denn es geht schon von allein.
Die Erde dreht sich von allein.
Dein Arsch bewegt sich von allein.

English Translation
By Itself

The sun shines today the whole night long,
Hang a thousand flyers

around the neighborhood.
If it gets louder today, then we’re sorry.
Come on by
and everything else will just happen by itself.

Que que salta
Que mueve tu cuerpo y salta
Que que toca el techo y brinca
Y siente el ritmo es soca
Sigue sigue salta
Que que mueve tu cuerpo salta
Que que toca el techo y brinca
Y siente el ritmo todo el mundo

Nobody asks how come.
Nobody asks why.
Nobody asks how it’s going.
Because it just happens by itself.
Nobody asks where to.
Nobody asks how long.
Nobody asks with whom.
Because it just happens by itself.
The earth turns by itself.
Your ass moves by itself.
The glasses fill up by themselves.
Today everything happens by itself.
Germany dances by itself.
Everyone can do it by themselves.
Don’t think, just let it be.
‘Cuz today everything happens by itself.
Que mueve tu cuerpo
Que estás caliente
Me encantas Mami

I like celebrating and I like kicking back.
A little partying

is necessary every now and then.
I want to jump, I want to dance and scream.
Everyone together, today nobody will be alone!
We’ll party today the whole night through,
Let the corks pop with the whole neighborhood.
Everyone twitches, everyone stirs, everyone has to move.
Come on, just let yourself go.

Regardless if blue, white, green,
Regardless if black, red, gold,
We celebrate all colors.
We put that thing in motion,
Your flag in the air.
Hey
Your flag in the air.
Everyone radiates.
It feels so good.
The streets belong to us.
We whoop it up.
Your flag in the air
Hey
Your flag in the air.
