Technology: Implementing One-to-One Computer Programs

From SmartBrief:

Schools implementing one-to-one computer programs should look beyond the technology to set goals in areas such as student engagement, explains Barry Bachenheimer, director of curriculum, instruction and assessment for one New Jersey district. In this article, Bachenheimer and other school leaders share the lessons they have learned while implementing such programs, including how best to train teachers, students and parents on new technology.

News: Teachers Can Use Technology to Curb Cheating

From SmartBrief, a topic all teachers need to deal with:

Some students today are using the same technology they use to access their electronic textbooks to cheat on tests and other assignments in the classroom. Dorothy Mikuska, a former high-school English teacher and founder of PaperToolsPro, suggests teachers help prevent classroom cheating by creating an "atmosphere of learning and work," rather than testing and scores; teach students how to learn; and help students realize that failure can be a learning opportunity. "Left to their own devices without training wheels, they can fall," she writes.

News: Blended Learning Combining Technology and Tradition

From SmartBrief:

Blended-learning models allow students to progress at their own pace through a mix of online lessons and in-class interactions with teachers and peers. More schools are turning to the high-tech method, according to this article. "[W]e've seen how technology has the power to enable this new learner-centered form of education in effective and efficient ways," said Andy Calkins, deputy director of Next Generation Learning Challenges, which awards grants to blended-learning programs.

German: Die Fantastischen Vier – Populär (song)

Here is Christina with another great German song!

This time:
"Populär" ("Popular") by the famous German hip hop band Die Fantastischen Vier (The Fantastic Four). Fanta 4 have been making music since a quarter of a century by now. :)

umzingeln dich
berieseln und umringen dich
die alten Sachen fand ich ja ganz gut
die neuen nicht
mit ihren miesen Tricks
können die mich nicht locken
weil ich weiß die können nichts
nur Kohle abzocken
im Moment haben sie wohl genug
in ihrer Band davon
Trend ist auch ein Argument
weil meine Schwester kennt sie schon
doch irgendwann sind sie dran
und dann kennt sie keiner mehr
gestern niemand morgen tot
und dazwischen was populär

Jaja komm ruhig her Mann
und hau mich an hau mich an
ob ich dir auch ein Autogramm geben kann
hau mich an
was ich mir plötzlich alles leisten kann
mach mich an sag zu mir
fang was andres an lass die andren ran
hau mich an
und dann nimm mein Bild
von deiner Wand
und schau mich an
und dann nimm mein Wort
aus deinem Verstand
und hör mich an
und dann gib mir deine Hand
und mach dich locker
und sei kein Oberstübchenhocker

denn wenn du glaubst
mit dem Geld das ich hab
kann ich mir alles kaufen
dann hast du vergessen
dass die Dinge hier ganz anders laufen
spielt keine Rolle
wie du deinen Hunger stillst
das Geld das du nicht hast
kauft dir das was du nicht willst
Hoffnungen Gehässigkeiten
ungewollte Lässigkeiten
Vorurteile Vorurteile
Popular

I listen to the tape again,
because I’ve rewound it
‘Cos it’s my sound, dude,
and it goes off, I tell you
Come with me to the advance booking counter, man, and get them
The tickets, that are waiting for you,
bought from the money saved
My trips lead through the whole world
because I like
To experience the band,
to live the ideas that they give me,
to devote myself to the songs,
with posters to hang up
To look after the t-shirts well,
to put the records on
To persuade my parents
until they say they don’t mind
When they ask me why,
I don’t have to think hard
Because they’re good and,
therefore, popular

They stand on every corner,
but not near me
‘Cos I’ve had enough of the muzak
of these clowns
‘Cos every jerk knows them
from TV and the radio and so on
Their racket and their show
are everywhere
They encircle you,
surround you, wash over you and beguile you
I liked the old stuff,
not the new stuff
They can’t attract me
with their bad tricks
‘Cos I know all they know
is how to rip you off
At the moment, they must have enough cash
in their band
The trend is also an argument,
‘cos my sister already knows them
But sooner or later it’ll be their turn
and no-one will know them anymore
No-one yesterday, dead tomorrow,
and popular in between

Yeah, come here, man,
scounge from me, scrounge from me
Whether I can also give you an autograph
scrounge from me
what I can suddenly afford
come onto me and tell me
to start something different and let the others
have a go
scrounge from me and take my picture down
from your wall
Look at me
and then remove my words
from your head
And listen to me,
then give me your hand
and relax
And don’t be an idiot

‘Cos if you think
I can buy everything
with the money I have
Then you’ve forgotten
that everything’s different here
It doesn’t matter
how you satisfy your hunger
The money you don’t have
only buys what you don’t want
Hope,  hatefulness,
unwanted nonchalance
Prejudice, prejudice,
other silly things
Enemies or friends, there are many stars
You can’t die
if you’ve been in everyone’s head
But now I’m alive and I have to do it
With my desire for villas
and a bottle full of fame
‘Cos no-one else would be up here
if I weren’t known better
But I hate it, I need it,
I fetch it and I smoke it
popular

Technology: Connected Learning and Today's Classroom

From SmartBrief:

Technology has opened the door to a vast world of information access for students and teachers, high-school teacher and EdTechTeacher instructor Shawn McCusker writes in this blog post. Students in today's connected classrooms can quickly access primary sources online, such as scientific notes, he writes. "In an economy of abundant information, connected students neither need to sit still to access information nor slow themselves to the pace of the teacher or their classmates," McCusker writes. "They are often free to explore and discover -- often at their own pace and on topics of their own choosing."

Technology: What is Quest-Based Learning?

From SmartBrief:

The quest-based learning approach -- popular on some university campuses -- is beginning to emerge in K-12 classes, suggests Dave Guymon, an online educator in Idaho. In this blog post, he writes that QBL is founded on elements of game design in learning communities and allows students to take charge of their education by choosing activities that promote learning instead of assignments. Research indicates that under this instructional method, students have been shown to do more work, earn higher grades and outperform in other ways, he writes.

Technology: Using Social Media to Create Hands On Experiences

From SmartBrief:

Social media tools, such as Pinterest, can help math students improve their skills, writes Chicago-area middle-school math teacher Pauline Zdonek. In this blog, she outlines how she "pinned" sites to her page for a hands-on project for her students to create math notebooks to store their supplies and resources. To be effective, she suggests using social media for a specific, targeted project and be selective about which content to post, to keep from becoming overwhelmed.

Technology: Integrating Technology Into The Classroom

From SmartBrief:

The key to developing a technology-based classroom is to do it seamlessly and with a focus on creating an engaging, student-centered learning environment, advises Kristi Martin, a teacher at the University of Texas at Tyler Innovation Academy. Martin in this commentary also writes about the behavioral expectations that should be in place when adopting a technology-based classroom. She offers an example from her school in which students put their devices in the "polite position" when it is time to begin working.
