Establish and maintain an active scholarly research agenda, teach graduate seminars and lower to upper-division undergraduate courses, and provide appropriate service to the Department, University community, and professional organizations.

The Department of Modern Languages and Classics at The University of Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in German, area of expertise open, to begin August 16, 2015. A Ph.D. in German or German Studies in hand by time of appointment and native or near-native fluency required. The successful candidate is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching at the M.A. level; an interest in Business and / or Technical German is preferred.

 The Department of World Languages and Literatures plays a central role in preparing the students of Portland State University to function in the global community. Because we believe that language is central to that ability, we offer instruction in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Ancient and Modern Greek, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Turkish and Vietnamese. The department is committed to teaching for proficiency. All of our language classes are designed to develop functional skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for eventual use in a broad variety of real-world settings. 

Programs:
 We offer undergraduate majors in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish; minor programs in the above languages and in Italian, Persian, Turkish, and Classical Studies. We also have a Certificate in Advanced Proficiency in Russian. At the graduate level, we offer the M.A. in World Language with a major in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish and the M.A. in World Languages and Literatures, with a concentration in two foreign languages. ## Position Summary The Department of World Languages and Literatures invites applications for an Assistant Professor of German to begin September 16,
2015. The candidate should show evidence of strong scholarship and a background in film, language, literature, culture and language pedagogy. The new Assistant Professor will join tenured colleagues, non-tenure-track instructors, and graduate teaching assistants in teaching German, will teach courses in his/her field of expertise at all levels, will advise German majors, minors and MA students, and will supervise MA papers and theses. Members of the department are expected to participate in the governance of the department, college and the university, to be active in teaching and in community outreach and to be productive scholars within their own area of academic interest. Duties and 

Responsibilities:
 Teach language, literature, film and culture courses across a broad spectrum at all levels, from beginning to graduate (Master's). Advise German majors, minors and MA students. Supervise MA papers and theses. Make scholarly contributions to research field. Provide service to the department, college and university. Write grant applications. Take an eventual role in the Deutsche Sommerschule am Pazifik Program. ## Minimum Qualifications 
* Ph.D. in hand at time of employment. 
* Native or near-native fluency in German. 
* Evidence of scholarly contribution to field. 
* Experience in language teaching and/or teaching in field. 
* Familiarity with proficiency-oriented language instruction. 
* Strong commitment to teaching and scholarship. ## Key Cultural Competencies

Minimum teaching load: four courses/year; graduate and undergraduate; usual dissertation, committee responsibilities. The appointment is expected to begin academic year 2015-2016. AOS: Kant, Philosophy of Mind (esp. Self-Knowledge, Rationality, Philosophy of Perception).  The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (MLLC) invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in German Studies and Film beginning September 1,
2015. We are particularly interested in individuals with a specialization in German and Central European cinema who unite inquiry into formal questions with a nuanced sense of the social context in which films are produced and consumed, and who are well-versed in the literatures and cultural traditions of Germany and Central Europe from an interdisciplinary and/or comparative perspective. Ability to teach courses in other European film traditions a plus. In addition to teaching survey courses and advanced seminars on film, literature, and culture, and contributing to an interdepartmental program in Cinema Studies, the candidate should be able to supervise and teach in a growing German language program. Typical teaching load is two courses per semester; candidates are expected to be productive scholars with active research agendas that will attract extramural research funding. 

Requirements:
 Applicants must have native or near-native fluency in German, Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in innovative undergraduate teaching.
