News: A case for French as the world's most useful language

In a recent article in Language Magazine,Richard Shryock, a French professor at Virginia Tech University, argues that learning French as a second language is a wise investment. French is a useful language to learn because it is widely used in several international bodies, such as the United Nations and NATO, he writes. He further adds that France has a large economy, and many U.S. government job listings require French-speaking applicants.

How do you view his arguments? Which languages do you feel are most useful to learn?
