German: Wise Guys – Köln ist einfach korrekt (song)

Here is Christina with another great German song!

This time a catchy song by a famous a-Capella band from Cologne about their home town: "Köln ist einfach" ("Cologne Is Simply Great") by the Wise Guys

Köln ist einfach korrekt

In Berlin kann man
kulturell sehr viel erleben,
und in München soll’s
ein super-schrilles Nachtleben geben.
Hamburg ist die einzig wahre Metropole,
und das Ruhrgebiet hat viel mehr drauf
als Fußball und Kohle.
Steuern hinterzieh’n
kann man am besten in Baden,
im Allgäu kriegt der Wandervogel
strammere Waden.
Auf Sylt riecht die Nase
frische Meeresluft,
in Frankfurt

Börsenduft.

Es gibt vieles, was ich gerne mag
in ander’n Städten und Ländern.
Bis zum heutigen Tag
konnt ich’s trotzdem nicht ändern:
Ich fühl’ mich hier wohl
trotz KVB und FC,
trotz Geklüngel und Filz:
Kölsch ist besser als Pils!

Ich kann’s nicht beschreiben,
doch ich werd’ wohl hier bleiben,
egal, ob’s dir schmeckt:
Köln ist einfach korrekt!

Hier in Köln ist das Wetter
eher wolkig als heiter.
Der FC kommt seit Jahren sportlich
keinen Schritt weiter.
Der Rhein schaut im Winter
in der Altstadt vorbei,

zwei Mark vierzig kostet jetzt
ein Gläschen nullkommazwei!
Einmal jährlich werden Spießer
plötzlich Stimmungskanonen.
Wer den

kölschen Klüngel kennt,
kann sich mit Pöstchen belohnen.
Herr Antwerpes möchte,
dass wir alle 30 fahr’n
— auf der Autobahn!

Es gibt vieles, was ich lieber mag

Es ist nicht dasselbe
wie an Isar und Elbe:

Köln ist nicht perfekt:
Köln ist einfach korrekt!
Cologne is simply great

In Berlin you can
have quite a cultural experience,
and in Munich there’s apparently
a pretty wicked nightlife.
Hamburg is the only true metropolis,
and the Ruhrgebiet’s got more going on
than soccer and coal.
To evade paying taxes
is the easiest in Baden.
In Allgäu the hikers get
stronger calves.
On Sylt the nose
catches fresh sea air,
and in Frankfurt

whiffs of the stock exchange.

There’s a lot that I really like
about other cities and countries.
Still to this day
I haven’t been able to change though:
I’m comfortable here
despite KVB and FC,
despite nepotism and cronyism
Kölsch is better than a pilsner!

I can’t describe it,
but I certainly will stay here,
doesn’t matter if you like it:
Cologne is simply great!

Here in Cologne the weather
is more cloudy than clear.
The soccer team
hasn’t improved in years.
In winter, the Rhine makes a stop
in the old part of town.

Zwei Mark vierzig is the cost
of a little glass of nullkommazwei!
Once a year Spießer will
suddenly turn into party animals.
Whoever knows

about Cologne’s favoritism,
will be rewarded with a sweet job.
Herr Antwerpes wishes that
we’d all drive 30
— on the Autobahn!

There’s a lot that I like better

It’s not the same
As on the Isar or the Elbe

Cologne isn’t perfect:
Cologne is simply great!

German: Word of the Week - Silvester

Here is Christina with your German word of the week!

This week:
Silvester / New Year's Eve

"Silvester," which translates into English "New Year's Eve" (or Hogmanay in Scotland), is on the last day of the year, on Decemeber 31st. Germans celebrate "Silvester" usually starting in the evening together with fiends and family. Many people drink sparkling wine at midnight and watch or light fireworks to mark the new year.

Here are some examples of how you can use this word:

Ich liebe Silvester! / I love New Year's Eve!
Ich feiere Silvester immer mit Freunden. /  I always celebrate New Year's Eve with friends.
An Silvester essen wir oft Fondue. / We often eat fondue on New Year's Eve.
Wir sehen uns das Silvesterfeuerwerk an. / We watch the fireworks on New Year's Eve.
Wo wirst du Silvester dieses Jahr feiern? / Where are you going to celebrate New Year's Eve this year?

French: 6 short films for the French class

Hello all, I came across this by accident and thought I should share it with you. Enjoy!!
http://tenseignes-tu.com/ressources-2/ressources-en-ligne/courts-metrages-fle/

Spanish: Imperative Practice

Hello all,
I want to share this amazing video I love. I don't think I have shared it with you before but it is an excellent practice for the imperative. You can have your students watch it and make their own guides for whatever they want following the same format. Make sure you ask your students to form in imperative the few phrases that aren't already. Another option would be to ask your students to change what they don't like about the video or even making a No sonrías ni seas feliz or "frown and don't be happy" guide.
This is one of my favorite videos for commands because it is fun, educational, students enjoy it and it is adorable. Enjoy!

German: Faun – Diese kalte Nacht (song)

Here is Christina with another great German song!

This time a beautiful German song from a Bavarian band with Celtic influences that might be right up your ally if you like hobbits and elves:

"Diese kalte Nacht" ("This Could Night") by Faun

Diese kalte Nacht

Diese Nacht ist kalt,
Und der Wind, der bläst
Durch unser Land.
Und wer jetzt noch geht,
Ist ein armer Tor
Oder auf dem Weg zu der Liebsten,
Die jede Reise lohnt.

Refrain:
Ohhh,
Öffne mir, lass mich hinein.
Dein Liebster steht im Mondenschein.
Diese Nacht ist so kalt.
So öffne mir,

liegt in ihres Liebsten Arm
Und danket sehr der kalten Nacht
und dem Wind dafür.

This cold night

This night is cold
And the wind, it blows
Through our country.
And whoever leaves now
Is a poor fool
Or on the way to his sweetheart
Who is worth any trip.

Chorus:
Ohhhhhh
Open up for me, let me inside.
Your darling is standing in the moonlight.
This night is so cold.
So open up for me,
Because tomorrow it will be too late.

My father watches over house and home.
My door is closed with an iron lock,
And I don’t have a key for it.
There’s no way to get to me tonight.

Chorus

But the night is so cold.
Finally she opens the door for him
And she kisses her darling’s cold forehead.
This night is so cold,
But she opens the door and he kisses her
Seven times, in thanks.

Chorus

The morning grays,
And the wind, it blows through our country.
But the girl

lies in the arms of her darling
And thanks the cold night
and the wind for it.
