This presentation focuses on one dimension of a larger research program looking at the infrastructure supporting second language writing studies. One large part of this research program involves addressing publications and publication venues. The specific focus of this talk will be the description and analysis of journal publication patterns in the field from 1950-2009. Based on information from a database of more than 2,500 journal articles, the presentation will include (1) the identification of the disciplines whose journals publish articles on second language writing, (2) the specification of countries and regions from which these journals originate, (3) a decade by decade account of this body of scholarship, (4) the identification of patterns over the entire sixty-year period, and (5) some tentative conclusions with regard to what all of this says about second language writing studies past, present, and future.
