Indiana AATG Immersion Day

For German teachers, from Indiana AATG:

"This year the Indiana Chapter of AATG will host their annual immersion day on September 9th in Terre Haute, Indiana. AATG members from all states are invited to join us for this fantastic opportunity at the member rate.

We will begin at the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center. A light breakfast will be available at the museum at 9:30 am followed by an interactive lecture with Eva Mozes Kor, a survivor of Mengele’s twin experiments, subject of the upcoming documentary “Eva,” and author of the book “Die Macht des Vergebens.”  

After lunch on the Indiana State University campus, we will consider how that past influences Germany’s role in the refugee crisis. German society is undergoing major changes with the absorption of thousands and thousands of refugees over the past few years. The media is saturated with stories, both pro and con, about this crisis. How can this topic best be integrated into current “Multi-Kulti” units? This workshop will offer suggestions, information, ideas, and strategies for creating activities. Participants will leave this immersion event with classroom-ready materials.

For participants who would like to stay in Terre Haute on Friday night, a block of 13 “AATG” rooms has been set aside at the rate of $114 per night at the SpringHill Suites. These rooms each have 2 double beds.

Anyone interested in touring the CANDLES Museum is encouraged to arrive early on Friday. The museum will be open until 4:30 pm on Friday afternoon, and Walter Sommers, a witness of the Holocaust and refugee from Germany, will lead a discussion at the museum at 1 pm.

For those in town Indiana AATG will also host an optional movie night at the Bierstube in Terre Haute at 7 pm. Transportation for those who would prefer not to drive to the Bierstube will leave the hotel at 6 pm and return later in the evening.

Terre Haute will also be hosting the “Blues at the Crossroads” festival on Friday and Saturday, so there is plenty to enjoy!

German: Deutsche Woche 2016 (AATG)

Deutsche Woche at Bar Harbor, July 31 August 6, 2016 is a week-long summer immersion program designed for German teachers at all levels of instruction, is sponsored by the Maine Chapter of AATG and held at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. Participants are expected to stay on campus and agree to speak German exclusively during the week. Participants may apply for 3 hours of graduate credit from Elms College. German: AATG Scholarship

Know a student who wants to go to Germany? Share these great scholarship opportunities for the 2015 AATG German Summer Study Program with your students!

Szombathy-Toth Scholarship. The AATG is offering one full need-based scholarship to an African-American, Native American, Hispanic, or other minority student of German. This scholarship covers all program costs, domestic airfare, and some spending money. Deadline for application is March 15, 2015.

Need-based Scholarships. Scholarships of up to 25% of the program cost are available to students whose financial need merits such support. Deadline for application is April 15, 2015. 

Käthe Wilson Scholarship. Each chapter of Delta Epsilon Phi may nominate one outstanding Honor Society member for a scholarship that includes all program costs. Deadline for application is February 15, 2015.

Announcing this year’s Staatskongress - Theme: Ich liebe deutsche Marken!

 

For those of you who have not heard about Staatskongress: It is an annual academic and cultural competition day held at Ball State University. German middle and high school students from all over the state compete in various competitions based on their level of German for ribbons and other awards, such as the overall highest ranking female student, male student and school. Students also attend interactive cultural workshops based on the theme for the year and can earnSprachgeld by speaking German throughout the day. Sprachgeld can be redeemed at the Jahrmarkt for a variety of German related items including chocolate, hats, stickers, and books to name a few. The day culminates in a dance hosted by the Alpine Express band.

Registration:

Teachers can register students at: http://indiana.aatg.org/iasg/. Registration deadline is: February 4th. Teachers can pay in person the day of the event, or send their payment in with their registration bill with a post mark of February 7^th. Please make one check for the whole amount out to the Indiana Association of Students of German or IASG.

Fees are $20 per student (including $1 per student for the Jahrmarkt). Each school also pays the $25 IASG membership fee. These all go toward the catered German themed meal, costs for the Staatskongress, IASG expenses (tax fees, etc.) and scholarships.  We increased the price $1 so we can return to offering two $500 scholarships.  

 

Student Representatives:

Please ask your students if they would like to be a representative of the IASG board or run for an office. Students (and their teacher sponsor), attend meetings to plan the next Staatskongress. We have about 4-5 meetings a year, on Sundays at 1 p.m. at the Host Instiution which will be Warren Central in 2015-16.  Please e-mail the candidate name, school and a picture to iasgerman@gmail.com by February 4th.

 

T-Shirts:

Students can purchase an IASG T-Shirt for $12 in advance and $15 on site. The shirts would be ordered with registration. All profits go to maintain IASG, student scholarships and help keep the price of Staatskongress down for the students.

German: DAAD 'Young Ambassadors' Program

Hello all, Chris here. Fellow German teachers, today I would like to share a recent bit of news I received from AATG and DAAD regarding the 'Young Ambassadors' program. There is also the newer 'Research Ambassadors' program. These are great programs and opportunities for your students so please help spread the word in your upcoming courses. Please read on for a detailed description of the program:

"Since 2005, DAAD New York has been operating its highly successful "Young Ambassadors" program, consisting of recently-returned undergraduate students who have studied in Germany are willing and excited to promote Germany as a study and research destination on their campuses. In an effort to assemble a similar cadre of informed and enthusiastic experts and advisers on higher-level research opportunities in Germany, DAAD New York launched its Research Ambassadors program last year. After a very successful first year, we are pleased to announce the call for applications for the second round of Research Ambassadors.

DAAD Research Ambassadors' primary role is to inform students and researchers in the USA and Canada about Germany as a research destination and to foster collaborations with German colleagues. They are a group of scholars and scientists committed to a wide range of activities to promote research in Germany, from providing information, mentoring, participating in panel discussions or information fairs, to being available to answer questions via email, hosting information events, etc.

Requirements

Eligible applicants:

-have completed a total of at least 10 months conducting research in Germany at the doctoral level or above;
-are familiar with the current research landscape in Germany for their respective discipline;
-are willing and able to attend the DAAD Research Ambassadors Training Workshop in New York City, from the evening of Thursday, August 19 until mid-day on Saturday, August 21.

Scholars and scientists from all disciplines are invited to apply.

Priority will be given to former recipients of DAAD grants and scholarships (i.e. DAAD Alumni), but other "Germany Alumni" will be accepted, including German nationals who studied in Germany but are now living in the US or Canada.

Responsibilities

The main responsibility of a DAAD Research Ambassador is to promote research opportunities in Germany in his/her professional community, university or organization, and discipline. This can take the form of:

-Contacting departmental chairs and senior administration officers to share information about study and research opportunities in Germany, including DAAD grants and other organizations' funding programs.

-Arranging an informational meeting on campus each academic year for students in their department and/or prospective applicants to DAAD programs.

-Providing advice and support to students and researchers interested in pursuing academic activities in Germany in his/her field from any university or institution in the US or Canada - and potentially doing the same for German DAAD grantees currently studying in North America.

Once selected, short biographies and photos of the DAAD Research Ambassadors will be posted to www.daad.org and www.alumni.daad.org so that interested parties can contact them with questions about research in specific fields in Germany.

At the end of each academic year, each Research Ambassador submits a short report to DAAD with any important contacts made and meetings organized. DAAD will include a short report form on the website to fill out.

Research Ambassador terms are for one academic year, and can be renewed. The RA may also request a multiple-year term.

DAAD will make reimbursements available upon request to cover expenses related to production of promotional materials or for refreshments at meetings or informational events.
