German: Translation Writing Assignment

The following is a writing activity primarily designed for high intermediate or advanced learners. This is a translation (Übersetzung) activity.

Students will work in small groups or with a partner as part of a Reisebüro. The goal is to take advertising slogans from English and to try and translate them into German.

Have students focus purely on the slogans. There are of course thousands of ads to choose from. In addition, you can have students do some out of class research on the ad you have provided them and as an additional component to the activity have students give a presentation in German where they must pitch their particular travel destination/vacation. This should be within reach of advanced students although you will want to provided intermediate students with additional time.

Alternately, you could do this activity but focus on other types of products such as cars, groceries, clothes, and more! This type of activity easily lends itself to a business language class. Feel free to adapt this for another language if you are not a German teacher!

Genuine or Counterfeit?

This is a role play I did with my students in China, and they seemed to have a lot of fun with it. It takes about 40 minutes (10 prep + 20 role-play + 10 reveal) and could be easily adapted for any foreign language classroom.

Cut up the cards below and give one to each student. Make sure to tell them not to show their cards to anyone.

Some of the students will be consumers; it will be your job to try to get the best deal you can on the items on your list. But remember, you don’t want to get tricked into buying counterfeit or shoddy goods. Ask a lot of questions and see how trustworthy the businessperson seems.

Other students will be businesspeople: some legitimate and some dishonest; it will be your job to make as much money as you can in 20 minutes. Good luck!

Wordle: Hamburg Chapter

Hi All. Jason here. Here's another look at a wordle image that incoporates vocabulary from a chapter on Hamburg in fourth semester German. This chapter focuses on the worlds of business and media in Hamburg.

Yes, you too can create your very own Wordle image using vocabulary or key words from texts in your language classes. Just go to Wordle and click on "Create" on the top menu bar. There you can create your Wordle using pasted text, or even enter in a web address and have Wordle compile you an image from a online article, or wiki page.

You can post your image to a public gallery, or with a little work, you can save the image as you see above. This involves taking a screen shot (just hit "Prnt Scrn" ) of your finished Wordle. Paste the screen shot into Microsoft Paint (Ctrl-V), crop, and then save in a format of your choosing.
