Chris here again. Today I would like to open up a discusion to our readers about the use of cellphones in class by students. Some see it as an educational opportunity to integrate the latest technology whereas detractors point to the disruptive effect it can have in the classroom. The recent Florida Educational Technology Conference focused on this very issue. Educators participating in the discussion stated that while there is widespread agreement that smartphones should be integrated into instruction, several issues arise when implementing mobile technologies in the classroom. Among the negative issues brought forth in the discussion, the following appear to be the biggest issues: text-messaging appears to be a distraction for students; additionally, the technology can be used inappropriately for cheating and bullying. Other concerns include misuse of social media, student safety, and whether all students and teachers have equal access to the technology. A technology gap among students (i.e. unequal access) would pose a serious problem as students without access to smartphones would be left on the outside. Another issue is at what level should smartphone use be considered. Can a minimum age for smartphone use even be established?
