Japanese: Music Video - YMCA -

Hi all, Junko desu.

There are lots of English songs covered to Japanese, meaning Japanese singers would sing the same song with Japanese lyrics. Here is an good example, "Young man". It would be interesting to have your students to see how lyrics are changed when singing in Japanese, and look for differences.

HI all Junko desu.

You think Japanese people eat sushi, rice and miso soup every day? Surprise, surprise, we do eat other stuff too! We have McDonalds in Japan, and they are popular with people of all ages. What is different in Japan is that each season, they have different kinds of burgers. Take a look at the TV commercials:

Japanese: Mr. Children Music Video

Hi all, Junko desu.

Sometimes classes go faster than you planned and you would be like "what should I do?", right? Should I just keep talking or have them talk?

Song dictation is like my back-up plan. You need to be careful which song to use though, since songs are pretty difficult to catch in general. For a beginning level, I always choose rather slow songs, than super fast rap songs.

Japanese music video

Hi all, Junko here.

If you like Japanese pop music, you know that a lot of singers are influenced by western music. Most songs include lines in English, and titles are all in English. Well for this one, the video's visual style is inspired by 1950's American culture, which is really interesting.

In class, students will be asked...

1. What is this song about?
2. How is the singer different from the ones you know?
3. Is there anything you found interesting in the video?
