Job Description Summary

The Department of Humanities at Michigan Technological University seeks to appoint a Visiting Assistant Professor of French for a one-year appointment beginning August 15, 2016. Salary is dependent on terminal degree status.
 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

* Teach a combination of courses at the beginning, transitional, and intermediate levels; coordinate conversation and lab activities; and assist with program recruitment and publicity.

Native or near-native fluency in French.

The Department of Languages and Literatures at the University of Denver is an undergraduate department offering nine modern foreign languages, including majors in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, minors in those languages plus Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, and Latin, electives only in Arabic and classical Greek. The Spanish program currently has 14 full-time positions comprised of seven tenure-line professors and seven non-tenure track teaching professors on multi-year contracts. The program offers courses from the introductory to the advanced levels.

Position Summary

The Department of Languages and Literatures at the University of Denver will hire a one-year, Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor of Spanish. Non-tenure track position, full benefits and 9-month contract. Position may be extended for an additional year, contingent on departmental need and funding. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity and inclusive excellence through their teaching, research, and service.

Essential Functions

• Teach eight classes over three academic quarters that focus on the first and second year Spanish curriculum.
• Possibility of also teaching the Iberian culture and civilization course.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated excellence and effectiveness in teaching Spanish language to Anglophone students in the US at the college or university level.

• Experience and demonstrated ability to work effectively with underserved populations.

• Ability to work through email and use MS Word and PowerPoint.

• Ability to learn and use DU’s Canvas course management system.

Required Qualifications

• MA in Spanish or related field (e.g., second-language acquisition) by Sept. 1, 2016.

• Experience teaching Spanish language at college or university level with proven excellence and effectiveness.

• Native-level or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD or ABD in Spanish, second-language acquisition or related field at the time of application.

• Two years teaching at a college or university level.

• Extended residence and travel in one or more Spanish-speaking countries are highly desired.

• Demonstrated experience and accomplishments in active support of diversity and inclusiveness.
