News: More Colo. students studying Mandarin as a second language

More than 60 Colorado schools are embracing Mandarin as the foreign language of choice for students who say the language will be important in the future. The trend toward Mandarin, the most widely spoken language in the world, represents a departure from when Spanish was the dominant foreign language taught in schools. According to Kuo Li, who teaches Mandarin and Chinese culture to 144 students at Battle Mountain High School in Edwards, Colorado, "Chinese gives these students a larger horizon in their future lives." News: Literacy a central topic at youth global issues summit

Eighty-eight percent of the 1,300 delegates attending the One Young World international summit in Pittsburgh pledged to improve literacy in their home countries. Literacy was the top concern among about six major areas discussed at the annual social issues conference of young leaders in their 20s from about 180 countries. According to Bangladeshi professor and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus,  "in this day and age, there is no reason absolutely whatsoever that someone should be illiterate." News: Mass. parent develops game to teach Mandarin

Vicky Wu Davis has started a weekly class for students ages 2 to 6, including her son, where she teaches Chinese through language with storytelling and group activities, such as making ice cream. Now Wu Davis is trying to gather funds for a tablet application --- Peach Ice Cream Adventures --- that will teach Chinese with methods similar to those she uses in class. According to Vicky, "if you wrap it up in fun things, they don't even realize they're learning another language". News: Ohio State will use grant to create language institutes in Asia

Ohio State University's Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures has recently been awarded a $9.6 million grant from the U.S. State Department in order to set up  and maintain four languages institutes in Asia in order to help immerse student in the language and culture they are learning. News: English language learners need multiple ways to learn

In a recent blog post, education report Lesli A. Maxwell writes that English language learners need lessons that allow them to understand the content of the curriculum and express their ideas, rather than focus on their acquisition of English. She writes about a policy brief recently issued by the Alliance for Excellent Education that calls on states to rewrite their ELL standards to align their goals to Common Core State Standards. The policy brief also recommends states offer English learners multiple paths to language acquisition that would allow them to be included in academic classes with their English speaking peers. Next year, kindergarten students at schools in Sherborn and Dover, Mass., could be learning Spanish 20 minutes a day, four days a week, if school officials approve the plan set for debate in December. The concept of flipped instruction appears to be catching on in classrooms nationwide, as more teachers say their students are benefiting from the technique.

Essentially, flipped instruction (aka reversed instruction) requires students to view online lectures outside of class while using valuable class time for group and project work which might otherwise be assigned for homework.

A recent survey on flipped instruction found that among teachers who have utilized it, most report increased student achievement. The technique, however, is not without its detractors. It has drawn criticism from some who say not all students have equal access to technology at home. There certainly still is a technology gap among students. Increasingly, Chinese parents are investing in English education for their children, with some even spending more than $1,500 a year on lessons. Several of these programs use American textbooks and curricula as well as some which hire native English speakers from other countries to teach students. Private Foreign Language Instructor (German) in Metro Detroit, MI‏

Foreign Language Instructor (German) in Metro Detroit

LinguaFlo, LLC is looking for several foreign language instructors with
specialties in Mandarin, Spanish and German to teach children part-time
after school hours. This work is intended for independent contractors
looking for supplementary income that are available on one or multiple days
during the week between 3pm and 6pm and/or during the day on Saturdays.
Exact times will be negotiated by LinguaFlo and the independent contractor
prior to the start of each class.

Classes will take place in various locations in Metro Detroit, including but
not limited to Troy, West Bloomfield, Farmington and Novi. Most classes
begin either the first or second week of January, 2013 and will meet 1x/week
for 1.5-2 hours. Teachers will be expected to design lesson plans for each
class based on the teacher's manual and guidelines provided to them.
Compensation will be $30 per hour of teaching.

Requirements

News: Will technology be able to expand Australian language teachers' reach?

Victoria, Australia: educators may turn to virtual classrooms -- where multiple classes of students are taught by one teacher over the Internet in order to fulfill a government promise to teach children a second language. However, a shortage of qualified language teachers means students will watch lessons in real time using videoconferencing. News: Using videos in the ELL classroom

Research has shown that videos are great learning tools for language learners. However, if not done in strategic ways, they can be overwhelming for students.
