German: Madsen – Lass die Musik an (song)

Here is Christina with another great German song!

This time:
"Lass die Musik an" ("Leave the Music On") by Madsen.

The member of the German rock band Madsen are: Sebastian Madsen, Johannes Madsen, Niko Maurer, Sascha Madsen, Folkert Jahnke. Three of the members are brothers with the surname Madsen, hence the band's name.

Leg deine Hand in meine Hand,

leg deine Hand in meine Hand

leg deine Hand in meine Hand
Lass die Musik an! lass die Musik an!
Nimm dir die 3 Minuten Zeit
und schenk uns deine Ewigkeit,
Lass die Musik an! Lass die Musik an!
Lass die Musik an!

Lass die Musik an! Lass die Musik an!

Leave the music on

You're standing awkwardly at the bar,
You hear this song
and it becomes clear to you:
Leave the music on! Leave the music on!
I can't dance, but I want to,
You have a similar feeling
Leave the music on! Leave the music on!

We don't have forever, this moment will soon be over, let loose, let loose, let loose!

Come on and give me this dance,
Lay your hand in my hand,
Leave the music on! Leave the music on!

There is a rhythm, that grips us,
I feel your heart, it beats in meter.
Crank up this beat, Leave this music on!
The way you move, the way you spin,
The euphoria that livens us up,
Leave the music on! Leave the music on!

We don't have forever, this moment will soon be over, let loose, let loose, let loose!

Come on and give me this dance,
Lay your hand in my hand,
Leave the music on! Leave the music on!
Take three minutes
and give us your eternity
Leave the music on! Leave the music on!

Leave the music on! oh oh oh oh...
Leave the music on! oh oh oh oh...

We don't have forever, this moment will soon be over, let loose, let loose, let loose!
A song that liberates us, play it once more I'll be there, let loose, let loose, let loose!

Come on and give me this dance,
Lay your hand in my hand,
Leave the music on! Leave the music on!
Take three minutes
and give us your eternity
Leave the music on! Leave the music on!
Leave the music on!

Leave the music on! Leave the music on!

Teaching the French passé composé and imperfect using Joe Dassin’s “Les Champs Elysées”

Because there is no straight-forward comparison to their L1, English-speaking students often have a hard time identifying and applying the French imperfect and passé composé tenses.  The following exercise is a fun way to review the tenses once they have learned the grammatical basics.  It helps in both oral comprehension and reading.

Instructions to PowerPoint (linked below):

11. Play both versions of the song asking students to write down any imperfect or passé composé verbs they hear.
22. After the video has finished, show slide 2, and have students pick out any verbs they didn’t catch from the listening.
33. Use slide 3 as an answer key and start a discussion as to why each tense was used (why did the songwriter use imperfect in this phrase and not passé compose?), and have students piece together the overall meaning of phrases using vocabulary they know.  This can be done individually or in partners, then discussed with the class.
44. Wrap up the exercise by showing the English lyrics, if you choose. You can find the lyrics with a quick online search.

News: Integrating Technology

From Smart Brief

Technology integration can be a difficult task for some teachers who may be apprehensive, suggests Dutch Tessier, a high-school English and media-literacy teacher, who recently became a technology coach. In this blog post, Tessier suggests teachers approach the process as if they were new to teaching, understand their limitations, acknowledge they will rarely be ahead of the learning curve, make a plan and adapt when necessary.

News: England schools aiming to serve increasing ESL population

From SmartBrief:

A majority of students at more than 1 in 9 schools in England do not speak English as their primary language, according to government data. Figures show the number of schools where a minority of students speak English as their first language has increased by 10% since 2009. As a result, schools have hired interpreters to help communicate with parents as well as bilingual teaching assistants for some classes.

News: How will technology affect higher education?

From SmartBrief:

Integration of social media and blended learning are among the top technologies that are expected to transform higher education in the next five years, according to a report released by the New Media Consortium and the Educause Learning Initiative. A panel of 56 experts convened by the two groups concluded that teachers and administrators must learn how to leverage social media across disciplines; find the right mix of online, hybrid and collaborative learning; and expect a shift toward "learning by making and creating rather than from the simple consumption of content."

News: Hidden Costs of Blended Learning

From SmartBrief:

With education budgets shrinking, many school districts have turned to blended learning as one solution for reducing costs. In some cases, it's been effective, allowing for shared resources, increased class sizes and the replacement of textbooks with some free or low-cost online materials. In other cases, blended learning has come with new costs, including the cost of new devices and infrastructure, as well as professional development for educators.

News: Ed-Tech Trends

From SmartBrief:

Flipped instruction and massive open online courses were two of the top education technology trends of 2013, according to Hardik Parikh, co-founder of PracTutor. In this blog post, Parikh writes that education technology is still in its infancy and only expected to grow as more schools integrate e-learning in their curricula. In addition, education technology also allows students to learn while having fun using online games and gives students more access than ever to information and resources, Parikh notes.
