The Department of Modern and Classical Languages at Western Washington University is inviting applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning September 2016. We seek a generalist in Japanese literature, religion, philosophy, culture or related field, preferably with a research interest in cultural studies. Responsibilities will include teaching a broad spectrum of language and content courses in undergraduate Japanese curriculum. About the College/Department: The Department of Modern and Classical Languages is home to 39 faculty members, 22 of which are in tenure-line positions. We offer majors in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, as well as minors in Russian, Latin, and Greek. Faculty teach at all levels of an undergraduate program and are expected to undertake research and participate in service opportunities. Several department faculty participate in such interdepartmental programs as Canadian-American Studies, East Asian Studies, Honors Program, and Linguistics. The Department is committed to the University's strategic goal of recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and welcomes all applicants. Standard quarter-system teaching assignment (3-2-2); exemplary teaching; active program of scholarly activity; service to the Japanese section and to the department through a range of activities. Required Qualifications: * PhD in Japanese (literature, religion, philosophy, culture or related field) by time of appointment * Native or near native Japanese and English fluency * Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching with ability to teach language and content courses * Demonstrated commitment to excellence in scholarship and a dynamic research agenda * Ability to work effectively with diverse students and colleagues Expertise and/or research interest in Cultural Studies
