German Language Program Director, Dartmouth College
The Department of German Studies at Dartmouth College is seeking an individual to coordinate its beginning and intermediate language courses and their supporting activities. With a five-year contract as Senior Lecturer, this Language Program Director will teach four courses per academic year. S/he will also guide and assist other faculty members in designing and implementing the Department’s language curriculum.
Qualifications: substantial training and demonstrated interest in Second Language Acquisition; native or near-native proficiency in both German and English; commitment to research and best practices in foreign language pedagogy; ability and willingness to communicate new impulses to members of the Department, the College, and beyond. Research expertise in integrating language acquisition and cultural content is welcome. Master’s or equivalent degree required, Ph.D. or equivalent degree preferred.

Duties of the position include:
Teaching Assignment:
- Four courses per academic year from the beginning (German 1–3) and, occasionally, intermediate (10.00–10.03) language sequence. N.B. Dartmouth is on a year-round quarter system, and faculty members work during three of the approximately ten-week quarters, normally fall, winter, and spring;
Planning and Oversight Duties:
- Curricular development of the beginning and intermediate language sequence;
- Coordination of oral testing by means of communicative tasks in German 1–3;
- Training and supervision of the Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) from Germany, who helps with the oral testing and with residential life at the German affinity housing unit (Max Kade German Center);
- Training and supervision of undergraduate “drill instructors” who reinforce grammar and vocabulary in oral drills that supplement faculty members’ “master classes”;
- Initiation and support of co-curricular events (e.g., German Club and Max Kade German Center activities), in collaboration with the FLTA;
- Coordination of the annual placement test for incoming first-year students;
- Maintenance and improvement of ancillary teaching resources such as oral drills and online computer exercises;
- Maintenance and updating of the German Department website.
Professional development, etc.:
· Conducting workshops to apprise departmental faculty of relevant developments in new SLA technologies, methodologies, and textbooks;
· Collaborating with other Dartmouth Language Program Directors and representing the Department in college-wide discussions of SLA pedagogy;
· Fully participating in meetings of the Department of German Studies.
