The College of Nano Science & Technology (CNST) in Soochow University in Suzhou city, China is recruiting a Director for its English Language Center (ELC). The ELC is looking for a well-qualified language specialist with extensive management experience in a university English language teaching department/organization. The successful candidate will lead a team of instructors and be ultimately responsible for all aspects of the curriculum, materials and assessment design, development and implementation, as well as helping CNST to recruit outstanding students. The Director will thrive on responsibility and bring enthusiasm, flexibility and patience to his/her work. Experience of working in China and knowledge of Chinese language would be an advantage. The position is initially for a three year period, with the possibility of renewal thereafter.
College of Nano Science and Technology, Soochow UniversityCNST is located in Suzhou. It is a new college jointly established by Soochow University, Suzhou Industrial Park, and the University of Waterloo in Canada. The college was founded in December 2010, and approved as one of the 17 national pilot colleges by the State Ministry of Education in October 2011, with the aim of reforming China’s higher education system and operation mechanisms. It aims to cultivate students with international vision and international competitiveness.
CNST offers bachelor, master, and PhD degree programs in nano materials and technology, and is dedicated to high-quality science education that meets the demands of this rapidly changing discipline. Currently, there are 400 undergraduates, 400 postgraduates, and 40 doctoral candidates enrolled in the college. Soochow University is located in the ancient town of Suzhou, also called "Paradise on Earth". The university is part of the national "211 Project" and is a "2011 Plan" university. It is also one of the Jiangsu provincial key comprehensive universities. It has grown from the former Soochow University founded in 1900. The English Language CenterThe mission of the ELC is to improve the professional scientific English and general English communication skills of undergraduate and graduate students. As part of the internationalization program at CNST, English will gradually become the medium of instruction for all subjects. The ELC is leading this process across CNST. The initial focus has been on the undergraduate program, but we are now increasing our work with graduate students.
Qualifications and experience of the Director
- EducationA Master or Ph.D. degree in the area of teaching English as a second/foreign language, Applied Linguistics or a closely related field.
- ExperienceAt least 5 years’ experience in teaching academic English, preferably in a Chinese university. At least 3 years’ experience in leading or managing a team in a university context. Experience in curriculum, materials and assessment creation and development of learner autonomy is also important.
- OtherAn interest or background in science, particularly teaching scientific writing to graduate students, along with an interest in China and experience of teaching Chinese university students is desirable.
